How Well-Insulated are Modular and Manufactured Homes?

If you’re shopping around for a new modular or manufactured home this season, one of the things you may have been wondering is how well will your home protect you from the environment. With cooler temperatures coming in this autumn and winter, you will need to know about modular home insulation.

Today’s homes are the best-insulated homes built, and that includes both modular and manufactured homes.

Before we get into detail about insulation, you will need to know about the term R-value. R-value measures an insulating material’s resistance to conductive heat flow. Higher R-values correlate to an increase in insulating power.

Modular and manufactured homes have different insulation for different parts of the house. For a home in the West Michigan climate, you can find of R-49 in the ceiling, R-38 in the walls, and R-25 in the flooring. The insulation is typically higher in the ceilings to prevent rising heat from escaping through the roof.

Modular home insulation materials can vary, but fiberglass installation is one of the most common types you will find in your home. It is commonly used in two different types of insulation, either blanket or loose-fill.

You are likely to find blanket insulation fitted between studs, joists, and beams. Loose-fill (or blown-in) is good for adding insulation to already finished areas, or around obstructions.
