History of Clayton Homes

Clayton Homes was founded in 1956 in Maryville, Tennessee by Jim Clayton.

After establishing its mortgage company in 1974 and soon after in 1975 a manufacturing division, the company underwent phenomenal growth. They went public and began trading on the New York Stock Exchange in 1983, and each subsequent year from 1989 to 1992, they were featured on Forbes as one of the best small companies.

Later, Jim sold it to Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway in 2003, and since then, Clayton Homes has been a part of the multinational holding company.

Over the years, Clayton Homes has absorbed several manufactured home companies, including Chafin Communities in 2015 and River Birch in 2016.

1. The Pounders Family

After living in a house they referred to as a “bachelor pad” for some time, Josh and his wife Jordyn wanted to own a home. They started doing some research online and came across Clayton Homes.

Josh narrates how they came across the Southern Belle after looking at fixer-uppers.

“After finding a model to tour in their area, they didn’t hesitate to pay a visit to the Crossland Homes of Asheville. It was all joy as they stepped into their future home for the first time. Immediately after the tour, they knew the Carolina Southern Belle was the home for them.

The Pounders purchased their home in early 2020. Once the home was complete, they received their keys and moved in on the same day. Courtesy of Clayton Homes, the Pounders now spend their time at their home decorating it and raising their children in a beautiful home. They had finally got their dream home.

2. Phillip and His New Clayton Home

Phillip bought a new mobile home from Clayton Homes. He appreciates that a Preferred Homes rep explained everything to him well.

The fact that his home was new also made the process somewhat different.

For a new home, you don’t need to drive all over town looking at houses. You just go to one spot and examine the place you plan to own.

Once you acquire your brand new house, if you identify any flaw, Clayton Homes is ready to fix it, and they never hesitate when it comes to this. Phillip, now a proud homeowner, is happy to have chosen Clayton.
